Scale resolved intermittency in turbulence

چکیده
The deviations Scm (“intermittency corrections”) from classical (“K41”) scaling c,==m/3 of the mth moments ( 1 u(p) I”) in high Reynolds number turbulence are calculated, extending a method to approximately solve the Navier-Stokes equation described earlier. It is suggested to introduce the notion of scale resolved intermittency corrections Sk,(p), because these &L&(p) are found to be large in the viscous subrange, moderate in the nonuniversal stirring subrange but, surprisingly, extremely small if not zero in the inertial subrange. If ISR intermittency corrections persisted in experiment up to the large Reynolds number limit, it would show by calculation that this could be due to the opening of phase space for larger wave vectors. In the higher order velocity moments ( 1 u(p) I”) the crossover between inertial and viscous subrange is (lOqm/2) -l, thus the inertial subrange is smaller for higher order moments.

A Mthod for Generating the Turbulent Intermittency Function
A detection method based on sensitization of a squared double differentiated signal is developed which discriminates the turbulent zones from laminar zones quite accurately. The procedure adopts a variable threshold and a variable hold time of the order of the Kolmogorov time scale. The output file so generated, includes all the information for further analysis of the turbulent signal.
متن کاملSmall-scale intermittency in anisotropic turbulence.
Isotropic, rotating, and stratified turbulent flows are analyzed using a scale- and direction-dependent flatness. The anisotropy of the spatial fluctuations of the energy distribution can hereby be quantified for different length scales. This measure allows one to distinguish between longitudinal and transversal intermittency as well as between horizontal and vertical intermittency. The differe...
متن کاملThe Phenomenology of Small-scale Turbulence
Small-scale turbulence has been an area of especially active research in the recent past, and several useful research directions have been pursued. Here, we selectively review this work. The emphasis is on scaling phenomenology and kinematics of small-scale structure. After providing a brief introduction to the classical notions of universality due to Kolmogorov and others, we survey the existi...
متن کاملIntermittency and universality in a Lagrangian model of velocity gradients in three-dimensional turbulence
The universality of intermittency in hydrodynamic turbulence is considered based on a recent model for the velocity gradient tensor evolution. Three possible versions of the model are investigated differing in the assumed correlation time-scale and forcing strength. Numerical tests show that the same (universal) anomalous relative scaling exponents are obtained for the three model variants. It ...
متن کاملIntermittency of Passive Advection†
An explanation of the origin of intermittency in the fully developed turbulence remains one of the main open problems of theoretical hydrodynamics. Quantitatively, intermittency is measured by deviations from Kolmogorov’s scaling of the velocity correlators. Below, we shall describe a recent progress in the understanding of intermittency in a simple system describing the passive advection of a ...
